It has also never had more marketing language designed to make every product sound clean, simple, and premium without committing to anything verifiable. "Made with real ingredients." "Simple." "No artificial flavors." "Premium." "Chef-inspired." None of those phrases have regulatory definitions. None require third-party verification.
This scorecard cuts through that language. We evaluated 15 frozen potato products across 10 specific, verifiable criteria drawn from the Clean Fry Standard. Every data point is sourced from the published ingredient list, the brand's disclosed facility certifications, or named third-party certifying bodies. No assumptions. No marketing language. Just what is actually in the bag and how the bag was produced.
The 10 Criteria
1. Seed-oil-free: Does the product use an oil other than soybean, canola, corn, sunflower, safflower, cottonseed, or any blend labeled "vegetable oil"?
2. USDA Organic on the potato: Is the primary ingredient certified USDA Organic?
3. USDA Organic on the oil: Is the cooking oil certified USDA Organic?
4. No chemical additives: Does the product contain zero compensating additives , no dextrose, no SAPP/SDHP, no modified starches, no natural flavors, no citric acid in a preservative role, no added sugars for browning?
5. GFCO certified: Does the product carry GFCO certification at less than 10 ppm, independently tested and annually audited?
6. Big 9 Allergen-Free (facility level): Is the product produced in a facility that permanently excludes all Big 9 allergens , not just product-level testing, but structural facility exclusion?
7. Steam blanched: Does the brand disclose steam blanching rather than water blanching?
8. BRC AA or equivalent GFSI facility certification: Does the production facility hold BRC AA or equivalent GFSI-recognized food safety certification?
9. No added sugars: Does the product contain zero added sugars of any kind , no dextrose, no cane sugar, no apple juice concentrate, no fruit juice concentrate?
10. Short ingredient list (3 or fewer): Does the product contain three or fewer named ingredients?
A checkmark indicates the criterion is met based on publicly available, verifiable information. An X indicates it is not met or not confirmed. Products are listed from highest score to lowest.

What the Scorecard Shows
The most obvious finding is the gap. Roots Farm Fresh scores 10/10. The next highest score among independent brands is Jesse & Ben's at 4/10. Every other product scores 3 or below. The gap between 10 and 4 represents organic certification on both ingredients, GFCO certification, allergen-free facility certification, steam blanching, and BRC AA facility certification , five criteria that no other brand currently meets simultaneously.
The second finding is that the organic brands cluster between 2 and 3, not because they are nearly equivalent to Roots but because they share two criteria: organic potato and short ingredient list. On the criteria that require facility investment and supply chain commitment , GFCO, allergen-free facility, BRC AA, steam blanching , every organic brand in this evaluation scores zero.
The third finding is that the premium-positioned conventional brands , Alexia specifically , score at or below the commodity brands. Alexia House Cut scores 1/10, the same as or below Ore-Ida on most criteria, despite retailing at three times the price per ounce. The premium is marketing, not ingredient quality.
The fourth finding is that the sweet potato category is the most heavily processed segment. Every sweet potato product in this evaluation except Roots uses a starch coating system, cane sugar, and natural flavors on top of a seed oil. The clean sweet potato frozen fry did not exist before Roots created it.
